the secret when you’re overwhelmed.

It sounds like you’re overwhelmed. Do you remember what that big word means?”
Her scrunched nose and puzzled look mirrored the “no” that came out of her mouth.
“Do you remember what it feels like when your room is a big mess and it’s time to clean it up? And you think it is too much and too hard for you?”
She smiled with understanding, almost giddy to be on the same page with me. She cleans her room daily, so this is a common experience.
“That’s feeling overwhelmed. Do you remember the secret for when you feel overwhelmed?”
Again the confused look.
“It is to do just one thing. Put one book away. And then one more. And one more. It is too much to do all at once. But if you just do one thing at a time, soon your room is clean!”
She nodded but seemed disappointed that my secret for her wasn’t more exciting or magical.
And as she marched away to the kitchen to complete the task that had brought about our conversation, I felt the Holy Spirit whisper to my heart.
“This is a sermon for your own heart today. I see you here. I know it often feels too much and too hard. That’s okay. Just do one thing. Don’t get ahead at how big and overwhelming it all is. Listen to the words you gave your daughter. They are for you too.”
I want the secret to not being overwhelmed to be more exciting and magical, but here it is. A gradual shift. One step at a time. Just one next thing.
Where do you feel overwhelmed today? What one thing you can do today to put this secret into motion? I’d love to hear in the comments.
For me, today I feel overwhelmed in lots of areas. The pediatrician visit tomorrow. Dinner tonight. Plans with friends. Our Sunday school lesson plan.
So I started with checking my son in online for his appointment. One thing.
Then I decided what dinner is tonight. Something easy.
I’m off to send an email! One thing at a time. ❤️

Good word, Alison! And most young parents, both mothers and fathers, often feel overwhelmed. Life is odd at times — what seems overwhelming today may be routine tomorrow.
